Written By: Garry McKay Hamilton – The Great Lakes Tour is thrilled to announce an exciting new series that will give players on the GLT an enhanced route to play in the Ontario Open Golf Championship, a stop on the PGA TOUR Canada. The Ontario Open Qualifying Series will include six multi-day events on the GLT where players will accrue points. At the conclusion of the series the top two players will receive exemptions into this year’s Ontario Open, July 28-31 at Woodington Lake Golf Club. Players who finish third through fifth in the OOQSeries will have their entry fee paid into the Ontario Open Monday qualifying... “We couldn’t be more proud to be associated with one of Canada’s oldest golf championships,” said Jim Kenesky, co-owner of the Great Lakes Tour.
“Ontario Open tournament director Craig Loughry and the ownership group at Woodington Lake have been wonderful to work with on this project. Having this Series travel across Ontario will not only help build up the Ontario Open but it will showcase our great players and the wonderful golf in our province.” The OOQSeries is open to professional and amateur members playing the Great Lakes Tour. Loughry said the Ontario Open team are looking forward to the new partnership with the Great Lakes Tour. “This provides more opportunity for more players to access the Ontario Open through Great Lakes Tour events from across Southern Ontario,” he said. “The Ontario Open Qualifying Series will be exciting to follow as each event takes place. “We are proud to bring these unique opportunities to earn spots into the Ontario Open to Great Lakes Tour players. THE ONTARIO OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP The Ontario Open has a storied history dating back to 1923, making this Championship one of the oldest Championships in the world. Past champions of this event reads like a who’s who of Canadian and International golf, and includes the immortal Sam Snead, Canadian golfing legends George Knudson and Moe Norman, as well as seven-time champion Nick Weslock. THE GREAT LAKES TOUR Since 2001 the Great Lakes Tour (GLT) has been the leading professional developmental tour in Canada. The GLT remains as the longest operating developmental golf tour in Canada and is a proud partner of the East Coast Pro Tour (QC) and the Vancouver Golf Tour (BC) The GLT operates with full tournament resources and event staff that are passionate and highly skilled in all tournament operations from course marking/set up, starting, scoring, rules and communications.
