Waterloo ON - The Great Lakes Tour (GLT) was back in action this week at Grey Silo GC in Waterloo ON for the GLT Waterloo Championship June 7th and 8th.  Grey Silo GC has been a regular host course dating back to the 2003 season with this being the 22nd time the GLT has held an event at the facility.

The GLT Waterloo Championship was the third of six Ontario Open Qualifying Series events where the leader and runner-up, not otherwise exempt, in the point standings will earn an exemption into the Ontario Open Championship July 28-31, 2022 a PGA TOUR Canada event.

With heavy rainfall warnings issued for the Kitchener/Waterloo region, Round 1 of the GLT Waterloo Championship started at 7 am on Tuesday in the rain.  Most players and officials were expecting a delay during the day, however Mother Nature cooperated and the golf course held up and 18 holes were completed.

After round 1, the leaderboard was extremely close as many players performed well in the tough conditions and it was John Maley of Sudbury ON and current GLT Order of Merit leader Derek Gillespie of Pickering ON sharing the lead at 5-under par 66.  Sitting just one shot back of the leaders at 4-under par 67 was Austin Ryan of Waterloo ON, Jake Scott of Strongsville OH and Thomas Giroux of Georgetown ON.  Giroux, the 2021 Ontario Men's Amateur Champion turned professional and was making his professional debut at Grey Silo GC.  Also in the field were recent Ontario Men's Amateur Champions Sudarshan Yellamaraju (2017) and Cougar Collins (2020).

The final pairings were set for Wednesday's final round as Austin Ryan would join Gillespie and Maley in the final group with Scott and Giroux being joined by Stephen Gonko of Sudbury ON after his opening round of 2-under par 69.

As the final round progressed and low scoring conditions were prevailing, it became a three player race for the Championship as Thomas Giroux (12-under par for the tournament and 8-under par for the round) opened a two shot lead over Jake Scott and three shots over Austin Ryan through 33 holes of play.

Giroux would make an untimely bogey on the par 3 16th hole and Jake Scott would make a near hole-in-one setting up a birdie to cause a two shot swing and tie Giroux for the lead.  Ryan would make par on the 16th to get within one shot of the lead with only two holes to play.

All three players would make birdie on the par 5 17th hole lining up a dramatic finish on the final hole.  Scott would find the left rough after his tee shot on 18 while Giroux would find the fairway.  Scott would hit his second shot to 12 feet and Giroux just missed the green short right but still able to get a putter on it from approximately 35 feet.

Playing behind Giroux and Scott, Austin Ryan would hit a perfect tee shot to within 130 yards for his second shot. Giroux would make an aggressive attempt and lipped his birdie putt out to finish with a par and post the clubhouse lead at 12-under.  Scott would calmly walk up and roll in the 12 foot birdie putt to post 13-under par for the tournament and a course record setting 9-under par 62 for the round.  Ryan would fail to hole out his second shot giving Jake Scott the well earned victory.

For the win Scott received $4,000 and 600 points towards both the GLT Order of Merit and Ontario Open Qualifying Series. He moved from 19th to 5th on the GLT Order of Merit presented by Roll ReadyTM and into the overall lead for the Ontario Open Qualifying Series.  Chris Wilson of Toronto ON occupies the second position by a narrow margin over Victor Ciesielski of Hespeler ON.

Players earning one of the four $125,000 Sani-Marc/Fenergic Canada Cup exemptions were:
  • Thomas Giroux
  • Cougar Collins
  • Sebastian Szirmak
  • Mitch Sutton (low back nine (32) tie breaker over John Maley)

The next event on the GLT schedule is June 16-17 at Trillium Wood GC in Corbyville ON for the GLT Belleville Open.  This will be the fourth of six Ontario Open Qualifying events.
