Ancaster ON - Chris Wilson of Toronto ON made birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Derek Gillespie of Pickering ON and Freddy D'Angelo of Niagara Falls ON to win the GLT Ancaster Challenge at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster ON.
Mystic GC was in outstanding condition as Superintendent Ryan Surette and his staff prepared the golf course to give GLT players a true championship experience which in the end would give the event a very dramatic finish.
After the first round of play on Thursday, Jake Scott of Strongsville OH held a one shot lead over three players. His round of 4 under par 68 was ahead of Derek Gillespie, Chase Komaromi of London ON and Luke Moser of Kitchener ON who all posted 3 under par 69's. Chris Wilson opened his tournament with a tidy 2 under par 70 and Freddy D'Angelo posted a 71.
For most of the back nine during the second round Freddy D'Angelo was in control as he played the 18th hole with a one shot lead over Wilson and three shots over Gillespie at the time. An untimely bogey from the greenside bunker dropped D'Angelo to 4 under par for the tournament which opened the door for Wilson and Gillespie to catch him.
Derek Gillespie, who struggled most of the day, finished his second round in exciting fashion as he holed out his second shot on the 16th for an eagle then proceeded to birdie the par 5 17th and made a 12 foot birdie putt on the 18th to join the playoff at 4 under par. Chris Wilson, playing with D'Angelo, hit the green and had a 25 foot birdie putt to get to 5 under. He would just miss the putt and joined D'Angelo and Gillespie in the playoff.
The three players went back to the 18th where Gillespie struggled to put the ball in play off the tee and became a non-factor. With D'Angelo and Wilson sitting perfectly in the fairway, D'Angelo hit his approach to 30 feet while Wilson hit a fine shot to 12 feet. D'Angelo would leave his birdie attempt hanging on the edge of the hole giving Wilson a putt for the win.
Chris Wilson would make the putt for birdie and win the GLT Ancaster Challenge. For his victory Wilson received $4,000, an exemption to the $125,000 Sani-Marc/Fenergic Canada Cup and an important 600 points towards both the GLT Order of Merit presented by RollReadyTM and the six event Ontario Open Qualifying Series.
Next on the Great Lakes Tour schedule is the GLT Waterloo Championship at Grey Silo GC June 7-8. This will be the third of six Ontario Open Qualifying Series events.
